Cairns Vet Clinic would like to remind pet owners that Cairns Regional Council rules for microchipping come into force in December 2010. Cairns Vets are all registered to implant microchips. The best time to microchip your pet is at their first vaccination or when they are desexed if possible.
Under the new Animal Management Act 2008, all newly acquired dogs and cats in Queensland must be implanted with a microchip by December 2010. Existing pets older than twelve weeks when the microchipping laws were introduced do not have to be microchipped, although it is recommended. Any time a pet changes hands (eg sold or given to new owner, or adopting a stray animal) a microchip is also required. Cairns Vets can microchip puppies and kittens when they give your first vaccination.
